We’re Also Sick of the Question “Will Texas Turn Blue?” Yet Here We Go Again.

For as long as I’ve been a journalist in Texas—twenty long years—the question I’ve heard the most from out-of-state folks come election season is this: Will Texas turn blue this year? The answer, once the election results are tallied, is always “nope.” The list of dashed-hopes candidates continues to grow: Wendy Davis, M. J. Hegar, Beto O’Rourke (twice). Just as I was typing this late Tuesday, I saw—right on cue—a headline in The New York Times: “The Perennial Question in Texas: Is This the Year It Goes Blue?” The question is just as grating as it was in previous years, and it won’t be answered until November, but the conditions have changed since the last time it was asked.
