(No great writer would ever do the “Period.” thing, by the way.) Our writers, many of whom are full-time staffers, don’t just chronicle. They make the story. They determine it. In a great writer’s hands, a story is a singular thing. No one else could’ve told the story in quite the same way. That includes the subject they choose to focus on, the details they evoke when characterizing someone, and the lengths they go simply to report a piece.
