On the eastern edge of the Hill Country, Temple sits along the Balcones Escarpment. The fault line, which slices through Central Texas, creates a transition zone, where the coastal sediments and rich soil of the American South give way to the limestone of the American West. In that sense, the Bell County town embodies the state’s combination of Southern and Western (though not quite Southwestern).
