Given that Texas is a longtime one-party state, an outsider might expect that the Republican Party here is ruthlessly competent and the Democratic Party weak. In fact, both organizations are dysfunctional, and for broadly similar reasons: On each side, party loyalists care about some things more than winning elections. The Democratic Party is mired in its own hotly contested leadership struggle, which is too complicated to sum up here.
