Ruidosa ChurchIn the early twentieth century, around one hundred people lived in Ruidosa. Back then, the Rio Grande still flowed through this small, unincorporated Presidio County village, and local farmers were able to grow cotton. Residents were typically Mexican American—bridges connecting Mexico and the United States made crossing between the two countries common—and it didn’t take long for locals to begin the construction of El Corazón Sagrado de la Iglesia de Jesús, otherwise known as the Ruidosa Church. In 1915 or 1916, the church was finished; every Catholic man in the area is said to have been required to spend at least one day working on it.
