In September, the Texas Book Club will be reading LaToya Watkins’s new novel, The Book of Chuck, which takes place across Texas and spans four generations. The book tells the story of a family in which some members have clairvoyant powers, exploring themes of belonging, birthright, and the strength of familial ties. Watkins, who has spent her entire life in Dallas, where she previously taught English at the University of Texas at Dallas, has published three books, including a short story collection, Holler, Child, which was long-listed for the National Book Award. “What if the gift of clairvoyance is actually a curse?
