The Ross fire has wreaked devastation across Palo Pinto and Jack Counties in recent days. More than 80,000 acres have reportedly burned, and Texas A&M Forest Service estimates the fire is 12 percent contained. Some residents have evacuated, and schools have canceled classes. The footage is harrowing, and the aerial images of one spot in particular have, for me, summoned sorrow and nostalgia in equal measure. Worth Ranch, a Scouting America camp operated by the organization’s Longhorn Council that’s been around since 1929, has sustained catastrophic damage.
