Hikers pass over a bridge in Palo Pinto Mountains State Park.The crisp wind flowed up the steep hillside in waves, hissing through the juniper needles. Cedar elm branches creaked and squeaked and occasionally clacked together. It sounded like the trees were chatting with one another. I found a gap between the trunks and looked out at a hilly, forested landscape, and below me a wide river led into a lake. For a moment I was reminded of walking in Colorado’s Maroon Bells.I was in Palo Pinto Mountains State Park ahead of its grand opening, on April 10.
