Netflix Is Adapting ‘Lonesome Dove.’ Here’s Who It Should Cast.
Lonesome Dove, as both an 843-page novel and a 384-minute TV miniseries, is perhaps the most quintessentially Texan piece of fiction in the canon. The book won a Pulitzer Prize in 1986; the 1989 show earned seven Emmys and two Golden Globes and reinvigorated the then-fallow western genre. (Dances With Wolves and Unforgiven won Oscars in its immediate wake.) The modern myth of the Texas cowboy was as shaped by Larry McMurtry’s epic and its screen adaptation as past iterations of it were by Buffalo Bill, John Wayne and John Ford, and Louis L’Amour. Because of this lasting influence, and given that the entire world is still obsessed with us, it’s perhaps no surprise that this week Netflix announced a new adaptation of Lonesome Dove.
