In 2014, when Matthew McConaughey and Timothée Chalamet co-starred as father and son in Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, McConaughey had just won a Best Actor Oscar (for Dallas Buyers Club) and Chalamet was still in the early stages of his career, with only one film appearance under his belt. A dozen years later, the duo will reunite at the University of Texas to discuss their craft and their careers – including, one imagines, Chalamet’s own Best Actor Oscar nominations for Marty Supreme, A Complete Unknown, and Call Me By Your Name.
On February 21, UT’s Moody College of Communication will host a town hall-style conversation between McConaughey, a native Texan and UT alumnus, and Chalamet. The event, co-produced by Variety and CNN, will stream for CNN streaming subscribers and pay TV subscribers via CNN.com and CNN connected TV and mobile apps. The one-off is an extension of Variety’s popular Actors on Actors series, which brings together industry talent for candid conversations.
Calling the evening a “one-of-a-kind town hall event,” Variety’s Co-Editor in Chief and Co-President Ramin Setoodeh said, “We can’t wait to bring together two of the most daring actors in Hollywood.
Filmed in front of a live audience at the Moody College of Communication, where McConaughey has taught film since 2015, the actors will also answer student questions in what CNN described in a press release as a “masterclass in craft and creativity” for aspiring filmmakers, producers, directors, and screenwriters.
