There’s an old allegory that goes something like this. In hell, the dinner plates are bountiful—packed with fruits and cheeses and spiced meats—but the damned are given obtrusively long spoons, so as to prohibit them from feeding themselves. In turn, the infernal suffer their requisite starvation and misery: so close to pleasure and yet so far from it. In heaven, the dinner plates are also bountiful, and the spoons, you might be surprised to learn, are too long as well. But the blessed have learned to serve the person sitting across from them, and so they feast eternally, getting fat and happy.This week, at a Rangers-Yankees game in Arlington, I was teased by a similar vision of paradise.
