Woody Harrelson Joins Armadillo World Headquarters Documentary Team

Woody Harrelson joined the Armadillo World Headquarters documentary team as a producer last week. The feature-length film, currently in development, is directed and edited by Los Angeles-based filmmaker David Brodie and will detail the storied venue’s rise to cult prominence and its legacy as the site of outlaw country-and-beyond experimentation. The stage hosted iconic Willie Nelson performances, AC/DC’s first American appearance, and countless other memorable performances in its decade of operations. “The Armadillo wasn’t just a music venue,” Harrelson said in the press release. “Careers got started there, genres mixed, and what really sticks with me is how it made people feel like they belonged. People came for the music, but what they found was each other. The Armadillo represented something we don’t see much anymore, and that’s a big part of why I wanted to be involved with this film.”

Hot Luck food festival, freshly purchased by publisher People Inc., returns October 16-17. The festival’s signature live-fire feast, Giddy Up, kicks off Friday night’s festivities at Franklin Barbecue with stroll-and-sample bites by chefs from across the country, followed by a marquee music showcase at Mohawk (that lineup has yet to be announced). Saturday evening’s House Party will take over Assembly Hall with dishes, drinks, and more music. Austin’s own Evan LeRoy (LeRoy & Lewis Barbecue), Fermín Núñez (Este), Tavel Bristol-Joseph (Canje), Tracy Malechek-Ezekiel (Birdie’s), Kevin Fink (Emmer & Rye), and Edgar Rico (Nixta Taqueria) are among the chefs presenting creative plates at the culinary celebration. Co-founders Franklin and James Moody “remain actively involved in guiding the festival’s future,” according to a press release, and the event remains partnered with the service industry-boosting Southern Smoke Foundation. 

Texas Book Festival unveiled 18 of its featured authors earlier this month, including beloved children’s writer Kate DiCamillo – who is celebrating the deluxe collector’s edition of The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane – and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Colson Whitehead, following the July release of his Harlem trilogy cincher, Cool Machine. Poet Maggie Smith, investigative journalist Patrick Radden Keefe, romance author Lyla Sage, and host of the revived Reading Rainbow program Mychal Threets will also share new works, in addition to many more authors to be announced soon. This year’s fest runs Nov. 14-15.

DAWA will open applications for its Summer 2026 fund on August 8, offering $100,000 in the form of $300 unrestricted microgrants to “BIPOC artists, educators, caregivers, healthcare providers, social workers, and other essential community members across Austin.” This disbursement is the largest in the history of the organization, which has given over $500,000 to BIPOC leaders in Austin since its 2019 founding.
