Qmmunity: Four Hours of Sleep

I simply can’t talk much right now, Reader. Because you must be apoplectic over a less than rambling column from your excessively familiar columnist, I’ll tell you the truth. Last night I stayed up until 5am reading a book. Yes! I’m aware this behavior is very James circa 2005 when first your loyal queer event/news scribe dug into the Artemis Fowl series. However, a really good book really doesn’t care whether you’re 12 or 32; the words demand to be read way past the reasonable man’s bedtime. So, in my restless state, I deliver you a short but sweet Qmmunity that’ll hopefully keep ‘til next week. 

(The book is The Appeal by Janice Hallett, an epistolary mystery novel about a community theatre play and fundraiser gone fatally awry as told through the emails, texts, and other ephemera collected by lawyers. If you’ve ever observed a fundraiser combust in real time over Instagram with even a little interest, this book’ll grab ya.)

Speaking of literary treks, local social org Queer Black Women Alliance has added a nonfiction book club to their multitudinous event schedule. Their first meeting will be next month, Sun. Oct. 4, to discuss Alice Walker’s We Are the Ones We Have Been Waiting For. Consider this your early alert to crack in, as this upcoming meeting will cover chapters one through seven. Who’s invited? QWBA’s Instagram post says to consider joining “If you’re reading this, you’re black, queer, literate, and love thinkin’ bout thinkin’.” Discussion led by Ciara Cook.

An all Latine drag lineup performs at this fundraising showcase and market, which benefits families currently affected by ICE. 7pm.

The Dolly party keeps truckin’ with a tribute to the big wig and her fellow divas. Brigitte Bandit hosts in her Parton hair piece with Iggy Bank as Sabrina Carpenter, Miss Steelya Girl as Miley, and Natasha Capri as Beyoncé. 9:30pm.

Birthday Miracle Friday 11, Tiny Minotaur Tavern

Oh, but this isn’t specifically a queer event, I hear you grumble. LOOK. I’m bending the rules because this now 3 years young immersive pub got voted into best LGBTQIA Club twice. So that’s queer enough for me. Celebrate this and their many years of fantasy fun to come. 7pm.

Whispers of Fae  Saturday 12, Barrett’s Too

Romantasy lives on North Loop with this pole dance and burlesque showcase inspired by fairy sex slinger Sarah J. Maas’ literary universe. Sawyer Starfly emcees. 6pm.
