Austin Film Festival Announces Christy as Opening Night Film

DATE POSTED:September 30, 2025

Austin Film Festival (Oct. 23-30) re-enforces its reputation as the final festival stop before award season with a final lineup of year-end heavy hitters including Christy, the new boxing drama starring Sydney Sweeney.

Written and directed by David Michôd, the biographical sports drama recounts the life and in-ring career of Christy Martin: better known as the Coal Miner’s Daughter, she became the face of women’s boxing. However, as portrayed by Sweeney, her greatest perils never came from her opponents, but at the hands of her abusive husband/manager, James V. Martin (Ben Foster).

However, that’s just the first of the high-profile dramas announced today for the festival, adding to a list that already includes Chloé Zhao’s Hamnet, Park Chan-wook’s No Other Choice, Nia DaCosta’s Hedda, and the latest Benoit Blanc adventure from Rian Johnson, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery.

Also on the schedule will be Is This Thing On?, Bradley Cooper’s follow-up to the Oscar-nominated Maestro, with Will Arnett as a man fleeing his collapsing marriage and seeking succor in the New York standup comedy scene. Meanwhile, Paolo Sorrentino follows up his dreamlike depiction of a woman’s life, Parthenope, with his eagerly-awaited political parable, La Grazia. His fantastical view of world history is counterbalanced by the dark realities of Nuremberg, in which two Oscar-winners – Rami Malek and Russell Crowe – recreate the battle of wills between Nazis and the Allied prosecutors in history’s greatest war trial.

Texas films, as always, make their mark on the lineup, joining the previously-announced Train Dreams from Greg Kwedar and Clint Bentley, the duo behind another Oscar-nominated modern classic, Sing Sing. Two films that played at the Tribeca Film Festival, Bryan Poyser’s filmmaking tragi-comedy Leads and Angela Lynn Tucker’s documentary on groundbreaking lawmaker Barbara Jordan, The Inquisitor, make their local debuts, but they’re not the only familiar faces, as Austin transplant Charley Crockett takes director Patrick Heaphy on a tour of Texas in $10 Cowboy.

And it’s not all new films. The festival celebrates two modern classics with the writers in attendance, as Brian Helgeland comes to Austin for a special screening of beloved historical romp A Knight’s Tale, and Andrew Kevin Walker pulls the case files on the movie that completely rewrote the book on serial killers, Se7en.

Austin Film Festival takes place Oct. 23-30, and the Writers Conference runs Oct. 23–26. Passes and info at austinfilmfestival.com. Now here’s the complete list of all films announced for this year’s festival:
